Counter-Acting The Hellfire Missle Guidance System

The Hellfire missle is the most common deployed UAV and Helicopter launched missle by America and by some of the it's allies.

The missle itself has variations in range, firepower, weather capabilities and other attributes.

However, nearly all of the varieties use the same type of guidance system - Semi Active Laser Homing (SAL/SALH).

 

Avoiding being targetted and struck by these systems can generally be grouped into methods:

Avoiding being seen

Avoiding being targetted

and

Avoiding being hit

 

Avoiding being seen may include the use of structures (on the ground or underground), and materials or paints that don't absorb or reflect light from the Infared spectrum (as it appears that most targetting is done in Infrared and as such some companies manufacture camoflague netting and even clothes/military fatigues that resist the Infrared spectrum).

Avoiding being targetted means using counter measures to delay the targetting process or cause it to fail. This may include the use of laser detectors (military type is often called Laser Warning Reciever), smoke screens (conventional and infrared, even a dry powder fire exstinguisher may work well to hide or misguide the beam for a very short period of time) and materials or paints that don't absorb or reflect laser energy well (these are probably purpose made paints and not commercially available but may be able to be manufactured).

Avoiding being hit is a post-seen, post-targetting plan to evade the missle. It can involve the previos 2 types of methods or it could be: exiting a vehicle or even entering a building (whilst not perfectly solid advice; it is true that due to the targetting operation angle of drones from their altitude and how they often 'paint' their targets in flight that it becomes difficult for drones to target inside buildings via windows or tunnels for instance and depending upon factures a small 1 sided tunnel built into the terrain may-be (un certain) a simple feature for many people to avoid being targetted depending on several factors (IE direction of travel of drone, whether entrance/exit is cleaned or blocked, activity, whether enemy knows of the existance of this tunnel/shelter).
