Tech. note:

Here's something that's been on my mind for a while, but never really materialized before.

Due to my recent remix activities, I decided to have a look at this old favorite. This is one of the albums that I would have loved to remix from the multitapes (I'm not sure those tapes even exist anymore?). I tried to create a new mix with spectral extraction from the old mix which proved extremely tricky since there is so much panning activity and other funny shit going on. In fact, I was only able to get a decent result by remixing it to mono; any stereo separation I tried sounded weird and full of artifacts.

While in the process of working on that, I thought it might be good to do a stereo remaster as well, since I was already doing the restoration work and no official release really gets it right. This remaster is a fairly hands-off effort; I 'tightened up' the low-end and evened out some gain differences. I also cleaned up the tape distortion on Tr. 01 and some other unwanted anomalies that exist on the original recording, but without harming the sound.

The 45rpm tracks are folddowns from the original stereo mixes and frankly they sound pretty bad (to me). I bought the singles a while ago hoping they would be true mono, but alas. Tr 03+04 have lots of noise and are not up to my usual vinyl ripping standard, so these are included here for reference/educational value only.

"Some if not all had over dubs done in the studio with the basic tracks done outside. Frankly, for all of the trouble doing it outside, I still don't know why we did it that way...
Why not use Kramer on all the sessions where he was the most familiar which was the record plant? Because we could and afford it, so why not?"

"Eddie Kramer was requested by Blue Cheer due to his outstanding work with Jimi Hendrix. As a fact of the matter Eddie Kramer was at the Record Plant in New York working on Voodoo Chile by Hendrix. We scheduled around him and his sessions. During that time is when we were able to get to know Hendrix a bit as well."

Post-note:

Blue Cheer is often named as one of the forefathers of heavy metal. The band's late frontman Dickie Peterson objected against that label, insisting that BC was in essence just a heavy bluesband. But Rock 'n' Roll would never be the same after BC's sound; Stephens' heavily tube-distorted bottom-rich guitarsound, Whaley's frantic pummeling of the skins, and Peterson's bonechilling wail. They may not have been the first to do it, but no one before them took it to this level of manic intensity. And many generations of aspiring rock musicians looked at their first two albums for inspiration (myself included).

Unlike Black Sabbath & The Stooges who received universal acclaim later on, Blue Cheer stayed a cultband till the bitter end in 2009. And they were probably all the better for it. At age 61, Dickie Peterson still gave everything he had on stage and then afterwards sat himself down at the merch table and talked to all those who greeted him. A full-blood rockhero, who had lived the hard way and took nothing for granted. I will always remember him fondly. PS
